Pizza 73 - Buffalo Breaded Side'O'Wings (Calgary)

Pizza 73 is a well-managed 'chain' that operates mostly in Western Canada. One of the first to have a central call-centre and offer internet ordering (for the western canadian area), although they have decent pizza, I was more interested in trying their Buffalo Breaded Side'O'Wings this time.

Average size wings (7cm/2.75inches long) with about an average amount of meat on them (these ones seemed a little 'skinny'), they come with a ranch dipping sauce and baby carrots on the side (tied up in a plastic bag if you have them delivered). The breading is indeed a 'light' coating, covering the wings but definitely not a thick, puffy blanket, if you are looking for that.

The breading had a little spice in it (not very hot), it was the sauce (that had drifted to the bottom) that had the 'kick'. An orange, 'American Style' sauce (I call it that, as it is a buttery, lightly thick, "Buffalo" style sauce), it brought the heat in a suitcase and when it opened it up, it wore it well. The spices within the breading had only the lightest of spicy-ness, then the Buffalo Sauce (swished up from the bottom) walked up and gave me a 'cuff on the mouth. Decent heat that would make the average person's nose run in about 4-5 wings. Using the ranch dressing, you'll feel a bit more 'at home' if you are visiting from The States and order these Buffalo-style wings. Well done, 73.

Compliments Buffalo Style Chicken Wings from Sobeys (Across Canada)

The Compliments Buffalo Style Chicken Wings from Sobey's stores (across Canada) are above-average size wings at over 8cm long (about 3 inches) and 5cm wide (about 2 inches thick). They come frozen in boxes of just-under-1kg, stating there are always more than 17 wings per box.

With lots of juicy meat on them, keep some napkins handy for the generous amount of zesty Hot Sauce that they are seasoned with. The sauce is a 'Frank's Red Hot-like' sauce with a nice little kick to it (the normal person's nose will run in about 3 wings). You don't even have to add any real Frank's to make it more enjoyable, although you can of course!

Not seeming oily, but for nit-pickers it was a little 'gristly' in some wings and there are some portions that are parts of wings (large part of the drumstick but no end, etc) but those things only occur every few boxes and overall they are good quality, medium-large wings. The cooking instructions  [only reheating actually, they are pre-cooked] have a step or two more than some other packaged wings, but nothing too serious. They can be easily reheated in the microwave.

With a good amout of tasty sauce on top of good-sized (larger than average) wings, my compliments to Compliments brand Buffalo Style Chicken Wings! Bravo!

President's Choice Hot Wings from The Real Canadian Superstore (Across Canada)

The Real Canadian Superstore has chicken wings that are pre-cooked and sauced before being bagged and boxed up. I thought I'd try their President's Choice Hot Wings to see how they fared against the take-out/order chains and restaurants.

After cooking (there are microwave directions if you want to heat them up easily), they seemed to be average-to-below-average size wings with average-to-below-average amount of meat on them. There was a decent amount of sauce on them with no breading.

The sauce wasn't very hot (the average person's nose may not even run after 4-6 wings) nor was it flavourful. It seemed to hint at a "Buffalo Wings" style flavour (American-style, with butter as a main ingredient) but just ended up being be very 'oily'. Throwing on some Frank's Red Hot Sauce made them more palatable [of course!] but by themselves, this box at least, was a big bland flop.

Pizza 73 (Calgary)

Pizza 73 is a well-managed "chain" that operates mostly in Western Canada. One of the first to have a central call-centre and offer internet ordering (western canadian area), although they have decent pizza, I was more interested in how they treated their Hot Wings.

Average size wings but with a nice amount of meat on them, they come with a dipping sauce and baby carrots on the side. Not thickly covered in sauce, they do have a shine but aren't too 'oily'.

Not very hot (the average person's nose might start running in about 4-6 wings) but a decent flavour makes these wings just above average, but nothing to write home from the hotel about.

Pizza 3000 (Calgary)

A short strip-mall location I found, I was actually going in there for Pizza when I saw they also sold Hot Wings. I have been there MANY times for hot wings since then!

Medium size wings with a average amount of meat on them, they were lovingly drenched in a red sauce and it seemed like they were marinated in it, and then more was added after they were cooked. The result was very tasty, with a nice amount of heat.

They tasted so good in fact, I asked them how they did it and perhaps ideas as to what sauce they were using to emulate it at home but would still come by as a customer, of course. One person replied that they made their own, but another said it was Frank's Red Hot Sauce. It seems to be a combination of the two as Frank's on its' own doesn't have this exact flavour so they must add something to it and create their own mix. The heat builds up in about 3-4 wings and you can even ask for Extra Sauce on it. Wonderful. A Personal Favourite.

*In a recent order, when asked if I wanted Hot Wings I replied, "ya..very hot!" and what I got was more heat then taste (still good though), so I am not sure if they have a new recipe or if it was my request that changed this one order's flavour.. will update as I find out

Pizza Hotline (Manitoba and Calgary)

Medium size wings with a decent amount of meat. Not a lot of sauce but they are covered well with it. Oily, but not greasy, if that makes any sense. They even 'smell oily'. Perhaps that's how they are kept, or cooked, I'm not quite sure.

No breading on the outside, just skin and sauce. Not a lot of taste and not a lot of heat, but it does build up. Nose runs after about 5-6 wings. Not bad but very average.

The Pony Corral Restaurant and Bar (Winnipeg) - The "Suicide" Wings

When I said "hot wings", they asked me "Do you want them really hot?" and I asked, "What do you mean?" and they said, "We have Suicide Wings." So of course, I had to try them.

Large size wings, they have a light batter with obvious chili pepper seeds on them. By the time you are finished the first one, you realize why they call them Suicide Wings. Nicely hot with a lingering burn to them, if you aren't used to spicy food you'll be drinking water for an hour. Your nose will start to run after only 2 of these wings.

They came with an orange/white-coloured, speckled Ranch Dip, which had a nice Southern Chipotle-style flavour, quite tasty. The wings themselves didn't have a lot of flavour, but they sure brought the heat, as should be expected from their namesake.

Thursday

Domino's Pizza (Across Canada)

Medium-sized wings with an average amount of meat on them, these usually come looking 'wet' from their Hot Sauce shower and you can smell them through the tin foil they get wrapped in (to keep them comfy and warm, of course).

The orange-red sauce has some Frank's Red Hot taste to it, but with some other things that they are putting in, which end up making it a bit sweeter. The result is a succulent deliciousness with a nice amount of heat that builds up. Your nose will be running by the 4th wing - and you'll be licking every drop from your fingers because it tastes so good. Fantastic and a Personal Favourite.

Boston Pizza (Across Canada) - The Lightly Battered n' Grilled Ones

These medium-sized wings with a good amount of meat on them were deepfried and put on the grill as well, according to the waiter (if I remember correctly).

They were a little drier than most wings due to the cooking method and light breading, but they also had a nice taste from the grilling, with some blackened areas where they were lightly kissed by the flames. Not much heat, but it built up after a while. Your nose would run after about 5-6 wings. Even the Take-Out version comes with Ranch Dip and some celery sticks in a black container. I look forward to trying their other flavours and cooking types in the future.

Hot Wings On The Way

Just like the little objects of my affection, small-yet-tasty reviews of Hot Wings across Canada are on the way!
